Towel Dry Well

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #1

Get as much moisture out of your hair first before you start to try to do your do.

Towel dry your hair well to be sure there is no dripping. The more moisture you have in your hair the more initial time you will spend just boiling out that water before you can hope to begin to do anything that would qualify as actually styling it.

Hair will not form, bend or take shape until it is 85% dry. You can NOT style wet hair.

I even recommend wrapping your head in a towel and doing your make-up, having breakfast, getting mostly dressed first. This allows you hair to get drier before you begin to style it.

Note: Do not wait too long. if you hair gets too dry you will miss the window of opportunity for styling it and just have to re-wet it. This surely will cost you more time. Finer hair dries faster. Thick heavy hair can hold a LOT of moisture for a long time.

Rough Dry First

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #2

Get out as much moisture as you can before you begin to style.
Much like the advice in tip #1, get hair drier before you try to style it. Point here is that there is a difference between drying hair and styling hair.

Use a blow dryer in a rough and random motion to knock out much of the moisture.
If your hair is a bit longer, flip your head over to remove moisture from underneath where hair is more dense and more moisture is present (and tougher to remove).

Set up your gel

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #3

Allow styling product, gels or mousses, to set up BEFORE you try to go in and style.

Apply the proper amount of gel to your hands and into your hair. Distribute it thoroughly.

Do something else for a bit. Do your make-up. Have some breakfast. Get partially dressed. Hair gel needs time to set up. Once it is in and on your hair it will begin to dry. It will begin to pull some moisture out of your hair, too (see tips #1 and #2).

Once you begin to style your hair it will style faster having been given time to "set up" to do its thing.

Go Shorter

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #4

Less hair takes less time. It is really just that simple.

Shorter hair dries and styles faster. Less hair = less hair to do.

Simple, messy styles just require a glop of gel and a hand. Looks that are more finished and groomed may require a brush and a blow dryer but are don faster.

Short hair is one of the best ways to get a lot of your life back. Look at the image here. She looks happy. She is happy because her hair styles so quickly!

Use your hand instead of a brush

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #5

Your hand is your best hair brush. It has 5 big teeth like a BIG comb or 5 bog bristles like a BIG brush.

The best thing about your hand is its surface area. When you dry your hair with your hand you are NOT drying your hair. You are actually drying your hand. Your hand, with its ability to wick moisture from your hair, is pulling the water out of your hair and moving it to your hand. Then the surface area of your hand is drying fast... pulling MORE water form your hair... and on and on it goes. fast and easy.

Your hand can also better read the moisture left in your hair. Many hair styles collapse and do not last the day because they hair was not really, totally dry when you stopped styling/drying it. Dry hair is HOT. Really HOT. If your hair does not feel hot it is NOT dry yet.

Wet Sculpt

Hair in a Hurry Time saver Tip #6

Wet SculptWet sculpting is the styling technique of applying styling gel or mousse to damp hair, combing it in place and just letting it air dry.

I suppose you could think of it as doing your hair by NOT doing your hair... but there is a lot more to it.

The right cut is important to wet sculpting. So is brushing out the sculpt once the hair has dried.

You will need to use a bit more styling product as complete, even, saturated coverage is important.

Towel dry first.
Apply product liberally.
Comb and finger style into place as desired.
Allow to fully air dry.
Brush out the "set" and finish with some light misting of hair spray.

Wet sculpting is truly liberating form the tyranny of hair styling time and energy and many great looks on many different lengths and textures are possible.

Finger waves and pin curls are old school examples of wet sculpting hair. many more modern looks are possible, too.

Rub in a circle

Hair in a Hurry Time saver Tip #7

Hair in a HurryThis is another "use your hand" technique. I first experienced this technique when a client showed it to me when I was first out of beauty school. It looks funny and seems like it would create a mess... but it has lived on to become one of my favorite styling tricks for a great look in a hurry. it is especially good for volume and fullness in the top and front of styles.

Towel dry your hair (again). Apply styling product and let it set up (again). Place your hand palm down on an area of the head where you want fullness, lift, volume and style. Rub your hand in a small circle about this area while applying heat form a blow dryer. Rub in one direction. Do not change direction. Rub and dry for a few seconds and stop and move your hand away. This area will have achieved height and fullness with body and style. Move on to another area and repeat the technique.

This is a fast and easy way to create a tousselled look with style and speed.

Refresh with your hands

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #8

Hands again. See a pattern here?

Lightly dampen your hands under the faucet and run your hands through your hair to quickly and easily freshen up your look throughout the day.

This works great for any length and any style. Hair that has been wet sculpted will reactivate easily and even allow for changes and tweaks for a different look. Allow to air dry once more.

Use a spray bottle to refresh your look

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #9

Mist and re-do your doA light mist with a spray bottle set to a fine mist is a great way to freshen up your look fast. This is particularly valuable for longer styles that can go frizzy and messy during the day in many types of weather and humidity.

A fast shot of moisture reactivates styling product. Use your hands to restyle your hair. Off you go.

Walk In

Hair in a Hurry Time Saver Tip #10

Walk-ins welcome!Salons are busy. So are you.
You can get great service, fast, without an appointment.
This is not so much a time in the morning tip as it is a hair any day tip.

Stylists run late. Clients cancel.
Walk-ins are quite welcome in many busy hair salons.
Maybe your fave stylist is not able to take you when you walk in. Maybe that is a GREAT opportunity for you to try another cutter and another look. No harm, no foul there.

Get in and out faster with less hassle when you walk in and sit down fast. You are off and on your way quickly.

Do your hair the night before

Hair in a Hurry, BONUS Time Saver Tip #11

Night timeOne of the best ways to save time in the A.M. is to move a task to the P.M. before. Wash and dry and style your hair the night before. You will only need a light touch up in the a.m. and you will be off and on your way with your day.

Who knows? You might have a better night of you go to bed with your hair done. No telling what might happen. ;)
